Thanksgiving & Appreciation Party
Igbo Community Association of Nigeria, DFW (ICAN) is an association which brings together persons and groups of persons who are Igbo by birth, marriage, naturalization or adoption, within a Metroplex or geographical area. Our purpose is to promote and maintain Igbo heritage while enhancing a smooth cultural infusion in recognition of other cultures. Membership is open to all Igbo organizations in the geographical area as defined in our constitution.
There is something unique in Dallas/Ft. Worth Igbo. We don't always agree, but NdiIgbo around the world can learn something about live and let live from us. Not that we don't go to court over disagreements, but we always find ways of resolving our issues and still maintain the family unit. Last night, in a bigger hall filled to capacity, that tradition of oneness continued as the leadership of the umbrella organization Igbo Community Association of Nigeria, D/FW, Inc. (ICAN DFW) passed on the baton of leadership to a new Executive led by Chief Festus Okonkwo (Tallest). History was actually made as Tallest became the first Vice President to succeed as President, and to make the pudding sweeter, he was unopposed in what is usually a very do or die contest. As Chief Sam Nwankwo (Mmiri) graciously bowed out by term limit, he touted the achievements of his administration while acknowledging small hiccups.
We are on a pace to be the first Igbo organization to have $1m in our name. NdiIgbo, look at ICAN D/FW, Inc. and see what they are doing so you all can organize better. The building of this unique organization was not easy but we are today reaping the fruits of hard work. I salute everyone of you that worked to make this come true. What is surprising about the once very other monthly meeting is that parochial organizations send delegates of all ages. There are at least three octogenarians that regularly come and they contribute ideas that are valuable. We about 20 guests, candidates running for various offices in Dallas County who are seeking support from NdiIgbo for the up coming primary election in March. They were amazed at the number of people in attendance. I thank the leadership and the delegates for their patience in accommodating the august visitors, something that was not on the agenda. I must say that I am very proud of what we have in Dallas/Ft. Worth and sincerely urge NdiIgbo everywhere to make sacrifices, come together and work as a family. If we do that, building a fat World Igbo Congress will be a cake walk. Speaking with one voice in Nigeria will be realized. Let us get our house in order by uniting the small units first, to build a bigger and stronger house. Congratulations ICAN D/FW, Inc. and long live NdiIgbo! To God we give all the glory and may His mercies live forever. Loya Eziokwu |
